A Brief History of Amara Conservation:

Our work in the Masai Mara was originally inspired by the work of Ann Kent Taylor, who has received unprecedented freedom to tackle the bushmeat (poaching) problem in the area. Ann has been working with the local warden, as well as volunteers from Youth for Conservation, a group of young, highly motivated Kenyans who are concerned about the future of their country's wildlife resources. They have established a system of periodic de-snaring projects during which they have identified local "hotspots" for snare setting, established communication with the lodges, drivers, and guides in the area to report snares and injured animals for rescue, and developed relationships with the local leaders, County Councils and Minister who are all fully supportive of the work.

Initially our involvement was through financial support, but by spending time with the people and wildlife in the area, one can't help but discover a deeper level of interest in the issues at hand in the diverse but threatened ecosystem that is the Masai Mara. As a result, we decided to form Amara Conservation, an organisation dedicated not only to preserving the wildlife, but perhaps more importantly, devoted to helping the people of the Masai Mara improve their standard of living and their future by assessing their needs and helping where we can.
